Leo
The three fire signs (Trine Houses 1-5-9) show us the power of mental fire. In Aries the "Idea" is exposed by means of a powerful and shining impulse; in Leo the "Idea" is "recreated", (positively intellectualised), and expressed as experience of the "self", self-consciousness; in Sagittarius all the self-consciousness and self-affirmation of the Idea acquired in Leo is redirected towards a defined and altruistic goal.
Leo is the sign that symbolises all the qualities of the fifth (5th) House: Individual creativity; The ability to do "things" from one's own inner certainty; The more personal or individual's own intelligence; The more conscious emotions, (the unconscious or inherited emotions belong to the 4th House); The causal body or "talent of the Soul"; "The children of the Idea"
The environment
In Cancer (4th House) the individual is dependent, sensitive and attached to their roots, home and their closest and most familiar environment, it is their task to learn to be aware of their dependence in order to offer true "maternal" sensitivity. Acceptance of "attachment" is the first step towards turning it into empathy and understanding towards oneself and others. The Light of the home depends on the inner attitude.
Following the logic of the zodiac wheel, in Leo, (5th House), the individual appears with the ability to say "I AM", dependence on their environment is minimal, rather, with a positive paternal attitude, they are the leader of said environment and it will depend a lot on the subject's degree of evolution, if said leader will be egocentric and imposing, or rather generous, with altruistic tendencies.
The Sun
In Aries, the Sun is exalted because the Light breaks forth from the darkness, and in Leo the Sun is its ruler because it is through and only through the Sun itself that its Light can be experienced, reaffirmed, and interacted with.
Why is the Sun Leo's ruler?
Leo's most striking quality is its capacity to acquire self-awareness or self-radiance through the interaction between what it knows of itself and its environment. This can be likened to a sun that from within itself or its own inner reality consciously illuminates its environment, an environment that is in reality an outer reflection of its inner reality. Only that which is illuminated, that of which one is aware, is real. Truth is only partial, and is total when it is experienced or illuminated from consciousness.
It is characteristic of the subject with Sun or Ascendant in Leo to be able to demonstrate by means of "dramatised" experience its knowledge-feelings as a reality. In this sense, and regardless of the evolutionary level of the consciousness expressed through Leo, such expression will always be truthful, genuine, conscious and therefore affirmative, powerful, true of a King.
In our solar system, the source of reality belongs to the "Sun that illuminates it", hence the sun is the ruler of Leo's quality of dramatising, experiencing, self-awareness (inner light) as a reality or outer light.
Neptune – Uranus
Leo's subject expresses itself as a Sun, since all its interactions with its environment are carried out from the centre of its own universe, but depending on its evolutionary need, its activities may be "veiled" (conditioned) either by Neptune's signifiers or by those of Uranus, two qualities that help the Sun (the self-consciousness) to access and express the deepening and liberating secrets of self-consciousness.
Here is a brief reflection on the three paths that a Leo conditioned subject must follow, according to their evolutionary need:
Physical sun: This is the first, most basic and instinctive need of all consciousness. At this level, self-awareness is acquired and identified through the experience of the personality and its most basic physical, emotional and mental needs. The Lunar pattern imposes its karmic law and the Solar its passionate activity. The "lion" (the personality) is selfish by necessity and is capable of imposing its law on the environment in order to satisfy its instinct-desire. Multiplicity of forms and personal desire arise in the consciousness and Saturn sets the limits.
The heart of the sun: Here, consciousness is identified with the qualities of the Soul. Experience needs to be conscious of the qualities of the Soul: Intelligent Love, without forgetting the power still wielded by the personality. Hercules (the Soul) is inside the cave fighting with the personality ("the lion"), so duality is served. At this intermediate stage Neptune inspires higher astral-emotional forces, such as devotion and spiritual aspiration. The wish of the solar plexus is to know the heart centre. The "lion" learns that its power, its generosity, can be either selfish, (i.e. conditioned by personal desire), or altruistic, i.e. conditioned by Soul aspiration.
The spiritual sun: Here the need of the consciousness is to know the Divine Will. Hercules has overcome the "lion", (the personality expressed through the astral body), and uses and recreates it as the "garment" or tool to serve others. In this final stage Uranus, "the cosmic mind", inspires the consciousness with the kind of experience that will materialise the Divine Purpose on Earth (unity).
As we know, the process of many lives is in acquiring consciousness and relationship between the "first two Suns", and the final triumph of the second over the first. The self-awareness of the vast majority of us fluctuates between our more personal emotions and the possibilities our consciousness is able to perceive to "transmute" personal desires and achieve more altruistic-fraternal-attitudes. Ultimately being motivated and activated by desire does not indicate true self-awareness, but exists when the human being demonstrates mental perception via a self-guided life towards a defined goal. The highly evolved Leo subject is capable of being self-aware of its personal capacities in union with the spiritual.
Note that Leo is not ruled by any planet, but rather "advised", as the light of self-awareness (Sun) always has the final word, hence Leo's great capacity to act without external conditioning but from the freedom of inner knowledge.
Phrases that rule Leo
The phrase for unevolved Leo is:
"let other forms exist, I rule because I am".
The word for the evolved being is:
"I am That, That am I"
The first sentence is very evident: there is a duality, where one of the parties imposes itself on the other, there is consciously or unconsciously an implicit egoism.
The second one implies a duality included, i.e. the being, the consciousness, continues to assert its truth: "I am", but in its affirmation it includes the other: "That".
The power of its self-affirmation allows it the maximum identification with the "other", the multiplicity in an equal whole; notice that both the "I" and the "That" are capitalised.
From a subjective point of view it is curious to note that the sentence begins and ends with the "I" as the external expression (personality), and the double "That", inside the sentence, as something protected and generating love-wisdom (soul).
The Self is recognised in the Soul, to the extent that, in the highest expression of Leo, this Self expresses the Soul.
The Rays present through Leo
Leo's Rays of Ruling are: 1st Ray of Will and Power and 5th Ray of Concrete Intelligence. Leo brings in its "DNA" a powerful ability to lead, to rule (Regulus star of Leonis), and to express itself in an intelligent and forceful way.
On the other hand, as the esoteric books tell us, the sun of our solar system is ruled by the 2nd Ray of Love and Wisdom, hence the saying that "God is Love". Seen from this solar perspective, Leo, being ruled by the Sun, also has qualities of the 2nd Ray. In fact self-awareness (the main characteristic of Leo) is very much related to the meanings of the Soul, and the Soul is: Intelligent (Wise) Love.
