The esoteric rulers are the guiding planets of the horoscope when it belongs to an evolved Being, where its "desire" is not so linked to its active capacity (Sun), nor to its karmic inertia (Moon), but is conditioned by a need to acquire harmony between both (Ascendant), in order to achieve a greater expression of the Soul.

The energy that produces harmony (Sattva) is related to the quality of the Ascendant sign and its esoteric ruler, and being able to apply that energy in one self and the environment will always be a joy for the Soul.

Mercury: esoteric ruler of Aries

Aries is the energy of the first impulse, the desire - an idea that is imposed by the power of being the first. Genuine and brave breaks into the environment and is imposed through the power of de will. Aries expresses what he wants, and although the achievement of what is wanted is not clear, his strength and momentum are evident. His exoteric ruler is Mars, hinting at the power of the emotional polarization of the personality in the human being. When the Aries energy bearer shows some degree of evolution through attitudes such as: spiritual interest, need for self-knowledge, ability to discern, inclusive mind, understanding sensitivity, or altruistic service, then Mercury must be considered his ruler.

Now, for many lifetimes this power is only known to be expressed through the 6th Ray of Devotion and Ideal ruler of Mars, i.e. through the physical emotional experiences created by personal feelings, ideals or desires.

Later, when after the numerous reincarnations the consciousness requires another kind of higher experience, in Aries there arises the ability to express itself through the 4th Ray of Harmony and Beauty ruling Mercury. Here, the soul expresses itself through the higher mind, beauty or intuition.
